    EMS Rank Structure

    EMT

    Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is the entry-level rank in the EMS department. EMTs are responsible for providing basic life support, including CPR, wound care, and stabilization of patients. They respond to emergency calls, assess patient conditions, and transport patients to medical facilities. As they gain experience and further their education, EMTs can progress to higher ranks.

    Paramedic

    Paramedic

Paramedics are advanced healthcare providers who perform more complex medical procedures than EMTs. They are trained in advanced life support techniques, such as intubation, administering medications, and interpreting EKGs. Paramedics often act as the lead medical authority on-scene and are responsible for making critical decisions regarding patient care.

    Critical Care Paramedic

    Critical Care Paramedic

Critical Care Paramedics are specialized paramedics with additional training in handling critically ill or injured patients. They provide advanced care during inter-facility transports and are equipped to manage patients with severe medical conditions. Critical Care Paramedics often work in specialized units, such as air ambulances or intensive care transport teams.

    Lieutenant

    Lieutenant

EMS Lieutenants are experienced paramedics who have taken on additional leadership responsibilities. They supervise a team of EMTs and paramedics, ensuring that all operations are carried out efficiently and safely. Lieutenants also assist in training new recruits and may take command of larger incidents until a higher-ranking officer arrives.

    Captain

    Captain

EMS Captains oversee the operations of multiple EMS units within a specific area. They manage daily operations, conduct training exercises, and ensure that all equipment and vehicles are maintained. Captains act as incident commanders during large-scale emergencies, coordinating efforts with other emergency services.

    EMS Chief

    EMS Chief

The EMS Chief is the highest-ranking officer in the EMS department, responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the department. The EMS Chief ensures that all divisions operate efficiently and in accordance with the law and departmental policies. They set the vision for the department and work with other city officials to meet community health and safety needs.
