Police Department Rank Structure Police Department Rank Structure
Patrol Officer
Patrol Officer is the entry-level rank given to all officers in the department. Officers at this rank are responsible for conducting traffic stops, responding to calls, and performing general patrol duties. As they gain experience and demonstrate proficiency, they can progress to higher ranks.
Corporal
Corporals are patrol officers who have distinguished themselves through exemplary performance and leadership. They often take command of scenes until a higher-ranking officer arrives and are eligible to join specialized subdivisions such as SWAT and Detectives.
Detective Corporal
Detective Corporals hold similar responsibilities to regular Corporals but are specifically part of the Detective Division. They assist in investigations and lead lower-ranking detectives.
Sergeant
Sergeants are the first supervisory rank in the police department. They mentor lower-ranked officers, act as scene commanders, assign units to specific tasks, and assist Captains and Lieutenants. Sergeants collaborate to support patrol operations and manage areas as needed.
Detective Sergeant
Detective Sergeants have similar duties to regular Sergeants but operate within the Detective Division. They supervise detective teams, manage complex investigations, and ensure proper investigative procedures are followed.
Lieutenant
Lieutenants are high-ranking supervisors overseeing Sergeants and acting as watch commanders during patrol shifts. They periodically review standard operating procedures and provide input on departmental policy changes. Lieutenants hold this rank only within their respective subdivision and revert to the rank of Sergeant when operating in another subdivision.
Detective Lieutenant
Detective Lieutenants oversee Detective Sergeants and manage the Detective Division's operations. They ensure that investigations are thorough and meet departmental standards.
Captain
Captains are the leaders of specific subdivisions within the police department, such as the Los Santos Police Department, Blaine County Sheriff's Office, San Andreas Highway Patrol, San Andreas Detective Division, and Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT). They act as watch commanders, oversee operations, and report to the "Team of Chiefs" about the progress of supervisors and patrol units. Captains handle most issues brought by Lieutenants unless escalation is necessary.
Detective Captain
Detective Captains are responsible for the entire Detective Division, overseeing complex investigations, managing detective teams, and ensuring coordination with other subdivisions.
Deputy Chief of Police
Deputy Chiefs of Police are part of the "Team of Chiefs" and have similar duties to Captains but oversee the entire department. They are involved in making major decisions, such as selecting subdivision supervisors, reviewing standard operating procedures (SOPs), conducting promotion reviews, and handling other administrative duties.
Assistant Chief of Police
Assistant Chiefs of Police assist the Chief of Police in managing the department, focusing on strategic planning, resource allocation, and high-level administrative functions.
Chief of Police
Chief of Police is the highest-ranking officer, responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of the police department. The Chief ensures that all divisions operate efficiently and in accordance with the law and departmental policies.
